Vonnis Jean Rucker, one of sixteen children, was born in the small town of Coldwater, Mississippi. As a young girl, she found joy and adventure exploring the woods with her father, who taught her to see the beauty of God reflected in nature. Without much exposure to television, Vonnis developed a rich and vivid imagination that became her constant companion.
Although surrounded by many siblings, Vonnis cherished her moments alone, retreating to a special “secret place” deep in the woods — a peaceful landscape where her imagination came alive. There, she hosted tea parties with her imaginary friends and dreamed of one day meeting a little man from outer space who would become her lifelong friend.
Through The Secret Place, Vonnis shares these cherished childhood dreams, hoping to inspire children to embrace and unlock the richness of their own imaginations.
Her creative spirit eventually led her to become a songwriter and recording artist. In 1993, her debut CD, Stranger in the Sheet, touched audiences around the world. However, after facing serious illness during her music career, Vonnis discovered her true passion: writing children’s books that nurture creativity, wonder, and hope.
Today, Vonnis Jean Rucker is devoted to encouraging children to explore their inner worlds, believe in the power of imagination, and find magic in everyday moments — just like she did in her secret place.
The Secret Place

The Secret Place is a magical hillside, where white ducks glide gracefully across a sparkling blue lake. It’s a world of wonder where Cure, an imaginative little girl, spends her days reading to her pet animals, hosting tea parties with her imaginary friends, and playing joyful games. Though she’s an only child, her vivid imagination fills her days with adventure and companionship.
One day, Cure’s greatest dream comes true when she meets Zeek — a tiny man from outer space! Together, they embark on an incredible journey to help Zeek overcome a challenge and marry his true love. Along the way, Cure and Zeek form a lifelong friendship, showing that imagination and kindness can make anything possible.
